Breathing Method: Do you practice “red light” breathing?
This simple breathing method can help you feel better each day! In this motivational health video, Dr. Samuel A. Mielcarski, DPT (aka “The Health Raiser!”) offers a simple way to use traffic “red lights” as “breathing check-up stations”! What a great idea! Instead of being mad and frustrated, choose to use each “red light” to check in with yourself and ask: “How am I breathing right now?”. If your breathing is shallow and restricted (instead of full and deep the way it should be), this can cause you to feel anxious, tense, stressed, tired, confused, or even depressed.
Thus, breathing correctly can be an awesome: natural pain killer; stress regulator; and mood enhancer; as well as a means by which to keep the body pure, vital, and balanced. Breathing correctly helps to strengthen and unite the mind-body-spirit connection, and is also a means by which to access higher states of consciousness. Considering how important proper breathing is, it would be a good idea to have a way to perform a daily breathing “check-up” to see if you are breathing correctly.
Okay, so here’s one simple way of doing this: when you drive somewhere each day, you will have an opportunity (a traffic “red light”) to check in with your breathing. This simple method can reframe your whole day and help raise your level of vitality! However, you will have to run the experiment to find out!
Note: If you don’t drive or ride in a car, you can create other reminders several times a day to check in with your breathing as well. For example, these could be alerts on your phone; or even written post-it notes that say: “How are you breathing right now?”.
