*Cultivating Compassion

Compassion is one of the most important traits to cultivate if you want to find inner peace; as well as peace in the world. Total healing is based on compassion! Compassion is about opening your heart! It’s also about forgiveness and understanding! It’s about helping, listening, and making a difference! It’s part of the human experience! 

There are different paths to compassion…

Suffering is one!— This path is painful, but often necessary for some people to truly value the human condition. When you suffer enough, then your heart will open and you will prioritize giving and loving service toward others! (By the way: The word compassion literally means “to suffer together”!)

Awakening is another path!-– Whether it’s through a journal, meditation, prayer, fasting, workshops, retreats, or by other means of ‘waking up’, more compassion can be cultivated!

Observation is another path!– It’s not always easy to view the ‘truth’, but it’s often necessary in order to shift consciousness in the direction of compassion! If you don’t ever experience or witness hurt and suffering, then it’s hard to truly know and understand compassion.

Compassion toward ALL creatures is important! All living beings on this planet are connected. Cultivating compassion has a global effect. So, how you choose to live– eat; drink; sleep; rest; move; exercise; think; act; speak; and love– ALL matters! This is becoming evidently clear in the world we live in. That which does NOT represent compassion will continue to crumble and dissolve away, as it does not represent what is in the highest good of humanity!

There’s plenty of hate in the world right now! Choose not to be a part of it! Open your heart, awaken, and choose compassion instead!

At the grocery store…

Person in line at checkout: “Wow, somebody likes fruits and vegetables!”

My response: “Me too! Who do you know that does?”


Person in line at checkout on another day: “Wow, look at all those fruits and veggies! What are you making?”

My response: “Hopefully, good health!”


Person in line at checkout on different day: “Wow, that’s a lot of fruits and vegetables. You must really like eating healthy!”

My response: “Yes, it’s a hobby of mine!”


Person at checkout on another day: “Wow, how do you eat all those fruits and veggies?”

My response: “Usually with my hands. However, if any utensils are needed at times, I’m not opposed to that option as well.”


Yes, sarcasm…. one of the many talents I offer the world!


*Italian Pumpkin Seed Recipe

Here’s another scrumptious plant-based option to help raise your level of vitality! Packed with nutrition, this scrumptious meal is sure to deliver!


  • 10tomatoes (2lb)
  • 1 bunch basil (.20 lb)
  • 1/2lime(.2lb)
  •  sun dried tomatoes (1⁄4 cup)
  •  raw pumpkin seeds (1⁄4 cup)
  • 1 bunch cilantro (.2 lb)

Directions: Cut off the top 1⁄4 off all of the tomatoes and place in the blender. Blend the tomato tops with the juice of the lime, 1/3 of the sun dried tomatoes and 2/3 of the pumpkin seeds. Dice the remaining tomatoes, shred the basil finely and mix all together well with dressing. Enjoy this creamy classic!

*Q & A with Dr. SAM

Dr SAM- bio pic- Wellness Newsletter Question: A Wellness Newsletter Reader asks: What’s your opinion on using tools such as the “Fascia Blaster” to help improve the shape and function of the body’s connective tissue.

Answer: I am not personally a fan of modalities or interventions that leave bruising or having people looking black and blue. I’ve seen pictures and real life examples of this kind of result. When using such as tool, the claim is: “You are bringing blood to the surface and allowing the body to naturally restore itself by blood flushing to the area to move out toxins and fat and deliver vital nutrients. You want to have some mild bruising.”

Personally, I don’t think ‘bruising’ the body is necessary to change it’s shape. The ‘no pain, no gain’ philosophy can do more harm than good in many cases (especially when people don’t know how to judge the proper amount of exercise stimulus to be using). Working with your body, as opposed to against it, is the smarter choice in my opinion. Based on the past 20 years of clinical experience I’ve had, I’ve seen that tight and restricted fascia can be mobilized without beating yourself up. If you do choose to use such a tool, use it wisely!

Also, as with any health challenge, you must treat the underlying cause. In this case, you can blast the fascia all you want, but if a poor diet, lack of sleep, and poor postural habits are at the root cause of having tight and restricted fascia, you probably won’t get the results you’re looking for!
