The Power Of Awareness

In this video blog post, Dr. Samuel A. Mielcarski, DPT (aka "The Health Raiser!") discusses the importance of 'AWARENESS', and how it can positively or negatively impact one's health.

Dr. SAM shares a funny story in this video about one of his clients who was consuming a so-called 'cup' of coffee with the belief that this was good for him. After further discussion with Dr. SAM (as well as this client consulting his own wife) about what actually constitutes a true 'cup', this client was willing to rethink his choice about his perceived 'health beverage'. Is coffee really good for you? Do the detriments outweigh the benefits? How much coffee should one drink? These questions are briefly addressed within this video.

Zen Mind, Strong Body!

This is not just a saying, but a “standard of living”! 

The mind-body connection is REAL!

What this means is that... when you have it, your health and life will prosper. When it’s absent, there will be suffering! You must learn to cherish this connection. Protect it, nourish it, and feed it well each day! How do you make this connection? You create the habits, rituals, and behaviors that allow you to do so. You make this mind-body connection a 'priority' or 'standard of living'; just like other aspects of your life that help define the desire of 'how' you want to live.

For example:

  • How to eat the foods that nourish you properly.

  • Learning to breathe consciously into your life.

  • Learning to quiet the mind through meditation practice.

  • Learning to exercise in a way that is 'right' for you. 

This is one of my favorite things to do on my wellness retreats— teach people ‘how to’ cultivate the mind-body connection so their lives will prosper at a much greater level!

Why Plant-Based?

There is no doubt that we are a sick country. And... there is no doubt that MANY of the top leading causes of death in this country can be prevented with a modification in DIET & LIFESTYLE! 

Consider this: The TOP leading cause of death (heart disease) can often be prevented and/or reversed with a plant-based diet! Read that again! That's right, eating a plant-based (vegan) diet can often help to reverse and/or prevent heart disease-- the #1 killer in America! As you are pondering this 'food for thought', the same could be said for many of the other top leading causes of death as well. 

Now... how many other diets can do that? This makes one wonder: how many other diets are really ideal for us?

Although the “Vegan Movement” has become very popular over the past few years, there's been a growing awareness for awhile. About Almost 9 years ago, a UN report (in The Guardian) said that a “global shift towards a vegan diet is vital to save the world from hunger, fuel poverty, and the worst impacts of climate change”. Wow, that is a bold statement for sure. However, it’s also an honest and sobering one! The report indicates that the typical diet (rich in meat and dairy products) is NOT a sustainable one! This has been known for quite a long time actually. However, the truth of the matter is finally now coming to light. Hopefully, greed will take a back seat to global health!

The report also said: “Impacts from agriculture are expected to increase substantially due to population growth increasing consumption of animal products. Unlike fossil fuels, it is difficult to look for alternatives: people have to eat. A substantial reduction of impacts would only be possible with a substantial worldwide diet change, away from animal products.”

Although most people are still unaware, the MAJOR contributor to green house gases, climate change, deforestation, and water shortages is the animal agriculture business. Yes, the raising and killing of livestock is not only contributing to needless animal suffering, but the planet at large is suffering at a great cost as well! 

The bottom line: Plant-based diets can make people and the planet healthy!

Exercise Motivation: A Simple Approach!

If you need some exercise motivation, here's one simple approach: Get some glue and paste the exercise program to your forehead where it will 'stick' and you can see it each day to help remind you to stay on track! Just kidding.

Okay, here's the real approach: 

In order to stay committed to an exercise program, I would recommend keeping it: simple, fun, safe, trackable, and in alignment with your goals.

Simple- The easier the exercise program is for you to follow, the more likely you will follow it consistently. Don't get trapped in trying to accomplish too much in every exercise session. Getting things done in an efficient and effective manner can help keep you from feeling overwhelmed and quitting. (For example: fitting your workout into a 30-minute space if possible.)

Fun- Bottom Line: If it's 'play', you will enjoy it more and stick with it! However, if it's 'work' or boring, you won't!

Safe- Keeping your exercise safe will keep you safe, which means having greater confidence when exercising. This can result in greater compliance, as there is less fear (and actual chance) of getting injured.  

Trackable- Keeping track of your exercise endeavors each day (in a simple journal) will help prevent the common disconnect many people have between what they think they're doing vs. what they're actually doing.

Aligned with your goals- If you have specific goals (weight-loss, for example), then your exercise program needs to be in alignment with your goals to give you the results you desire (helping to motivate you and keep you on track). Although this sounds like common sense, many people often fail to do the right exercise for their chosen goals.

Your Body Is Your Home!

Your body is your home! Think about that for a minute. Go ahead: 60 seconds starting.... now! Ok, seriously though, think about it. Your body is your home. It's where you live each day. The word body comes from the word 'abode', which means 'a home' or 'place of dwelling'. So, what does your home look like? Is it clean? Is it orderly? Is it a place where health can reside? People often desire a big beautiful home, but often neglect the very one that they already have; the one that travels around with them each day. They invest lots of money into a mortgage, but not much into their own personal abode!

Each day, you have a chance to clean and build your body! Each day, you can pollute the very place you live, or you can fill it up with pure love! Each day, you can choose to make your body a better place to be! Here's some simple tips for cleaning and caring for your humble 'abode':

1. Eat plenty of organic plant-based foods (LOTS of fruits and veggies!).

2. Be a conscious breather. Breathe fully and deeply into your life each day. Breath = Life!

3. Clean your body with pure water and stay adequately hydrated.

4. Sunbathe!- Take in the vital rays of the sun each day! How much sun? Enough sun is the right amount!

5. Walk barefoot on the earth to stay grounded and fully connected!

6. Get plenty of restful sleep!

7. Move your body and keep it fit and strong! 

8. Keep your living and work space clean and orderly.  

9. Cultivate loving relationships with others! 

10. Have fun! Celebrate life each day! 

Take time each day to care for your abode (body). It's the only one you have and it's going to follow you around, whether you like it or not!

The Spiral of Health!

Your health can either spiral upward or downward, depending on the choices you make and the actions you.take every day. This includes how healthy you really want to be! Each choice and action can affect the choices and actions that follow. For example, if you choose to stay up late and not get enough sleep, you may then feel tired the next day. 

So, because you're tired, you may then be thinking unclearly and choose to consume some caffeine to try to perk yourself back up. This doesn't work because you're trying to make your body run on the wrong energy source.  This would be like trying to recharge the battery in your car by filling your gas tank--and with the wrong kind of fuel!

Then, later in the day, your energy crashes even more and you reach for something 'convenient' to eat. Although this provides you with a short-term high, it leads to a further decline in your body's vitality. You work all day, but it's a struggle to be productive. Your feeling sluggish later on, so you attempt some exercise to feel better. Due to the lack of sleep and poor dietary choices, your body can't perform well. You decide to push through it anyway-- getting those adrenal glands to kick on and give you one more shot of energy. It provides another short-term fix, but your health continues to spiral downward. 

You now want some dinner and want it easy and fast, so you stop by a fast food place and grab something 'to go'. You finish dinner and then check email. Your body is crashing again, but it's now time to watch your favorite late night TV show, so you deny yourself the sleep you need again.  The downward spiral continues to persist!

Does this sound familiar? 

I hope not, but if this is you, there is something that can positively be done to correct this path. Ride the spiral of health back upward. How can you do this? By making that one choice that will stop the spiral from spinning downward and reverse it to an upward spin. 

In the example above: Getting the sleep you need → to restore your energy reserves → to refreshen your mind → to make healthy choices→ to work productively → to have ample energy later to exercise wisely → to earn the next healthy meal that will be eaten → to keep you going to finish up your day strong and end on a positive note!

Which spiral do you want your health to be on? 

Upward, or downward? 

Choosing the upward-path is amazing journey.

The Music In Ya!

Everyone has some music in them!  A voice… a message… a song… a vision… a purpose! It’s important to set this music free! Express it in a way that will touch many; open hearts; create smiles; cause cultural shifts; and evoke everlasting change. Don’t be afraid to let this music play! Play it! Pay it every day! Sing it out loud! Use it for good! Make a positive difference! Your music is your calling. It’s your life lived on purpose. It’s the difference between wholeness and emptiness.  It’s the mesh of your being; the fiber of your making; the rhythm of your life!

Mostly… and this is really important… don’t you dare die with that music still in ya!  


On that note (yes, pun intended!), I am celebrating the 1-year anniversary since the release of my music: “The Health Raiser Song!”
